Educational Podcasts for Students

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

Being a student entails the biggest turning point of your entire life. At the same time, it is the stage where students decide on what they want to be in future and need every bit of insight they can get. You may not know this, but podcasts can help you find your path and educate you.

'Don't look for podcasts that are closely related to your major or favorite subject. If it is an educational one, it is still worth listening to or looking into, because podcasts often provide you with great things to think about life and future' – says Zola Richards, a content manager at Essayontime.

For this reason, we have collected a list of nine podcasts that every student should follow:

1. Stuff You Should Know

Have you ever been part of a conversation that went nowhere or got stuck without having an idea of a good topic? This is exactly what Josh and Chuck can help you with – information you will otherwise probably not encounter or need, but can prove to be great when you want to start an interesting conversation.

Topics are so various that you can never get bored from following this podcast. There are plenty of fun topics, which means that you will surely find something of interest!

2. How to Do Everything

Everyone wants an advice at a certain point in life, especially when they need to have something done. But what if you can get constant advice on anything you can think of, and all this from a single podcast? How to Do Everything offers a fair amount of education and at the same time, a lot of entertainment.

3. Hardcore History

If you were expecting the traditional history show this subject genre usually entails, this is not the usual history podcast. Dan Carlin asks many odd questions that you will not find in your textbooks, but can certainly open your mind to history facts and interesting information.

4. SciFri

The name Sci-Fri comes from science and Friday, since this is the day the podcast is released. If you are a science lover or simply interested in learning something new, this is a great place to get informed on different topics from all sciences. Starting with educational stories and activities to occasional show guests, SciFri is one of the podcasts every student should check out.

5. StarTalk Radio

Hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, this is definitely a popular show and not only among students. Tyson is a celebrity on the Internet because he explains fascinating facts about the universe, which means that you will actually learn a lot. All you need is a good mood and you are ready to sit down and enjoy learning new, strange information.

6. Planet Money

Following this podcast will show you how little you understand of the world of economy. And the great thing is, they explain everything in an easy-to-understand way, speaking of many different economic aspects. If you are into these things, you may end up being surprised from the rare answers to rarely asked questions, for example why textbooks are so expensive, when there is no real reason why they would not be free.

7. TED Radio Hour

Yes, the TED again. Students are often recommended to follow the TED talks, because this is the place where experts share information with the world. And even though the TED Radio Hour can be dull sometimes, it is a great thing to listen to when the TED talk they are referencing is an inspiring one. After all, it will all depend on the TED speaker and their topic.

8. The Infinite Monkey Cage

Listen to this podcast to check out a curious insight at science-related topics. You will find the podcast to be a bit political, but you do not really need to pay attention to the political agenda, do you? After all, an educational podcast's main goal is to educate and entertain people, so gather any important information you can from this podcast. It can actually be pretty balanced when they get an interesting guest on.

9. History of the World in 100 Objects

Would you be interested in following a podcast that covers 100 objects and speaks of how these affected history? Surely, you will never read most of this information in the schoolbooks or even encounter it in your lifetime, but it can prove to be very interesting once you start following it. Starting from the invention of the credit card to Inca Gold Llama, this may just be the most intriguing podcast you have listened to.

Not every podcast on our list will be interesting for every student, but take the time to check them all out before picking out your favorite. All podcasts provide you with educational, as well as entertainment value, which can be seen as a free, added bonus. Finally, since they are almost free to listen to, what do you have to lose?
